چکیده

A common approach to the study of rf sheaths is to separate the description of the sheaths from that of the bulk plasma. In order to solve the resulting set of equations, an appropriate boundary condition for the sheath model has to be specified at the sheath-plasma boundary. In the existing sheath models, this boundary condition is assumed to be stationary. In present paper, we investigate the ion dynamics in both presheath region and sheath region by using numerical as well as analytical methods. It is found that the presheath introduces an additional time scale ωpre = VB/l (here l is the char1 acteristic scale of the presheath and VB is the Bohm velocity). If the rf frequency ω is low enough so that ω ≤ ωpre, the boundary condition for the sheath depends on the ion dynamics in the presheath. In the very low frequency regime ω ¿ VB/l, an analytical expression for the ion current is obtained which agrees well with the numerical result.

Analytic solution for low-frequency rf sheaths in pulsed discharges.

The equations governing the evolution of rf-driven sheaths are solved analytically in the regime where the rf frequency is small compared to both the ionic plasma frequency and the ion transit time in the sheaths. Poincaré's map of first return is used to gain geometric insight into the dynamics of the circuit-sheath system. The requirements of minimizing wall bombardment while maximizing the e...

Sheaths with Dust Particles in the Oblique Magnetic Field

It is simulated the non-linear one-dimensional sheaths with dust particles of the given size, density and profile in an oblique magnetic field, using the modified PIC method with self-consistent dust particle charge. The Coulomb scattering and the collection of electrons and ions by dust particles are simulated by the Monte-Carlo method with 3D velocity distribution functions for electrons and ...

Effect of Ion - Neutral Collisions on Sheath Potential Profile IEPC - 2013 - 346

To investigate the effect of ion-neutral collisions on plasma sheaths over floating surfaces, experimental measurements of near-wall plasma potential profiles are conducted in a multidipole plasma device with neutral pressures of 1 and 5 mTorr-Ar. Sheath and presheath potential profiles are measured over a HP grade boron nitride sample using an emissive probe, employing the technique of inflect...

Temporally resolved ion velocity distribution measurements in a radio-frequency plasma sheath

The ion velocity distribution function (IVDF) above and within a radio-frequency (RF) biased plasma sheath is studied experimentally with a pulsed laser-induced fluorescence diagnostic in an industrial plasma etch tool. Temporally resolved measurements taken at eight different phases of the 2.2 MHz bias waveform show that the ion dynamics vary dramatically throughout the RF cycle (the ratio of ...

Electron presheaths: the outsized influence of positive boundaries on plasmas

Electron sheaths form near the surface of objects biased more positive than the plasma potential, such as a Langmuir probe collecting electron saturation current. Generally, the formation of electron sheaths requires that the electron-collecting area be sufficiently smaller ( m M 2.3 e times) than the ion-collecting area. They are commonly thought to be local phenomena that collect the random t...
